‘Enchantment from the Deep’ ~ my article and artwork published in ‘Spheres’ the spirit guide magazine 2010

‘May the foam door rise and fall in peace’ ~ from the age old hymn, On a Seashell.

The mysteries of mermaids, dolphins and the sea exist in the enchanting and unique water kingdom of bejewelled deep sea caves and sandcastles upon the shore. Oracles created by sand, sea and wonders of the oceanic realms, connect us to otherwordly places that lie deep beneath the sea.

Mirrors of ancient worlds and faraway places wash up on our shores in coral, pearls and seashells shining with the shady hues of crystalline. Seashore treasures hold a glimpse of an enchanting realm with its shimmering ocean chandeliers, far away from the world of sun, moon and stars.

I have visions of mermaids, as guardians of the great sea, in palaces of pearls and opals, and crystal caves. Known for their compelling beauty and the delightful fish tails they use to expres themselves, the merfolk sing their songs of the sea… The waves and tides carry their voices and bring their messages and warnings to those who know how to hear them. Sailors can hear their song and pirates knew of their magic. They can foretell the depths of the tide and the many moods of the ocean.

From seashore to seashore there is magic and enchantment all around. Listen for the sweet music of the Merfolk, watch for their messages in the foam and interpret their writings in the sand and on shells.

Atargatis is the eldest of all merfolk and known as the sea mother or the star that fell to sea. She is considered to be the mother of all merfolk and appears in the ancient inscriptions of Syrians, Phoenicians, and Greeks.

A seashell found long ago near a port on the Syrian coast was inscribed by tide runes, marks left by waves on the sand. This was considered a gift from the merfolk who worshipped the great sea mother, and was placed in an underwater shrine. Seashell scrolls are mermaids secret tales washed upon the shore…

Open your hearts to peer through glassy ocean doors into the underwater realms of merfolk and there will be starlight in your eyes forever more. Next time you take a walk by the seaside, I hope you are blessed by the offerings of the sea. These are treasures from every magical corner of the world sent to you by the charm of the horizon and the ebb and flow of waves.
